Deciding to Automate Sales Commissions

Voxel decided to automate sales commissions early on in their company trajectory. When they first implemented Palette, they had a small sales team and could have handled commissions manually. As a series A company, though, they knew they had strong growth ahead of them and decided to make automation a priority. According to Kacie Armbrust, Voxel's Director of Finance and HR, “I find that when you start things early it's so much easier than transitioning over later. Being able to have a structure right away that we didn’t have to transition into, or put historical data into, was very helpful.” 

Why Voxel Chose Palette

Voxel needed an automation software that was flexible enough to adapt with them as they scaled. Kacie explains, “For small teams, there are not a lot of options. There are minimum user counts far above what we needed at the time. We loved growing into the product over time.” Palette was able to accommodate Voxel’s size while still setting them up for success in the future. 

Voxel also had multiple commission structures for different roles, including sales, partnerships, and customer facing teams. Palette gave them the flexibility to accommodate all of these different rules easily. 

“For an early stage startup, it by far made the most sense.”

Palette has helped Voxel eliminate manual work, saving them time and allowing their team to focus on higher priorities.

“We are an early-stage startup; calculating commissions is necessary but it is not really a value add for the company. I have used this time working on strategic projects and just not being bogged down by the task.”

Automation also provides peace of mind around commission errors, helping build trust with the sales team. Voxel understood that there will always be a potential for human error with spreadsheets; savvy sales reps know this and want to double check spreadsheets and calculations, leading to less time spent selling. As Kacie puts it, “They trust a system more than they trust a human, understandably. It also allows them to look over time and see, what are my commissions going to be?”

The ability to give sales reps their own dashboards with up to date information has also helped Voxel. According to Kacie, “Because they have that dashboard, there’s not an element of surprise at the end of the month. They know what they are getting, and they would probably tell me about a mistake before rather than later on. I rarely hear from salespeople about commissions.”
